Project Overview #
The brief: turn the whole car into a giant LED screen. One week and 500 metres of RGB LED strips later, the Red Bull Chevrolet Camaro became a fully addressable pixel LED vehicle capable of playing video content and animations across its entire body.
The Challenge #
A car is one of the most difficult LED installation surfaces:
Curved surfaces: A Camaro’s body consists entirely of compound curves. Strips must follow curves without kinking, maintaining even spacing across all surfaces.
Power management: 500 metres of RGB strips at full brightness draw substantial current. Power distribution across the vehicle required careful circuit design.
Weather resistance: The installation needed to function at outdoor events in all weather conditions.
Weight: Every gram of LED strips, mounting hardware, and cabling was considered — lightweight mounting methods were essential.
Technical Solution #
Custom-designed mounting channels followed the body panels, with LED strips routed along the vehicle’s character lines. Controller hardware was concealed inside the vehicle with cabling routed through existing conduits.
The complete vehicle was pixel-mapped in LED Strip Studio software, allowing video content and animations to display across the car’s surface with correct perspective and orientation.
In Operation #
The Camaro becomes a rolling pixel LED display — capable of showing animations, colour sweeps, text, and simple video content. At promotional events, the car is an instant crowd magnet: a performance vehicle icon combined with fully addressable LEDs is inherently spectacular.
